Paypal, the world's leading online payments provider, wanted to create a Facebook application and a desktop version of their Give A Little Back campaign, which promotes peer to peer payments. Their digital agency Digital White tasked us with the design and build.
Brief
Give a little back is based on the idea of asking your friends to repay you money owed but in a light hearted and humorous way. The user can select from one of 3 mock “outdoor ad campaigns” which you can customise to display images of you and personalised messages asking your target to settle their debts. They then receive an email with 4 images The brief was to harness the extraordinary power of the world's largest social networking platform and create an enhanced version of the “Give a little back” campaign, to be Paypal UK's first official Facebook app. We were also asked to build a cross platform desktop app to sit alongside it.
Our Solution
In order to provide a more stable, better performing and more scaleable solution we first rebuilt the app from the ground up in AS3. This was paired down to fit the smaller dimensions of the Facebook platform. The process was streamlined so that there were less steps involved in sending out the requests as previously drop outs had been high. To further speed it up, where users were previously asked to upload a picture of themselves, the application now pulls in their profile picture automatically. This can be replaced quickly if wanted. They can now send the request to Facebook friends/ or external email addresses from the same page. Facebook friends receive the request from the sender as a notification showing the amount requested, with a link to view the campaign. Senders can also choose to pillary the friends that owe them money and place them in a Name and Shame gallery, that sits on their Profile. This shows how old the debt is and the amount owed.
